User-friendliness, a decisive aspect!

The success of a technical product is greatly influenced by its usability. Software, web-applications or even "simple" VCRs are becoming successful products, if they are tailored to the needs of their users and can be operated intuitively.

Your web presence – the modern visiting card for your organisation

A appropriate web presence has meanwhile become the central trademark of companies and organisations. Here, too, success is closely liked to user-friendliness. A high level of usability becomes evident when visitors to your page find information effectively, efficiently and satisfactorily. The closer your web page matches the expectations, requirements and habits of your target group the more successful it is going to be.

As so often, the devil is in the details: numerous factors have to be considered to actually ensure usability. Besides menu navigation or the suitable preparation and presentation of contents technical factors such as browser and system compatibility play an equally critical role.

Evaluation by experts is at the basis of well founded decision-making.

THE WOODBRIDGE INSTITUTE provides a versatile team of experts from the fields of Internet, Marketing and Psychology. We analyse your web presence criterion-based from different points of view regarding menu navigation, design and quality of contents, user satisfaction and technical realisation. This way you get useful and independent information on the current status of your web page as well as precise recommendations on how to improve it.

With the results of the analysis it is for you to decide if and how you would like to improve and expand your web page. If you decide on a re-design of your web page we will be happy to interact with your internet agency should you wish so. You will not only benefit from independent consulting during the improvement phase but also obtain a web page which will be ideal for your own requirements and those of the users.

Website-Evaluation – dimensions of the analysis

Each web presence is unique regarding purpose, stakeholders involved, complexity and users´ requirements. This uniqueness is reflected in our approach to analysis: THE WOODBRIDGE INSTITUTE will evaluate your web presence strictly according to your individual needs. We offer our services in modules which are independent of each other to a large extent and can be combined flexibly.

  • Module 1:  target and demand analyses

    • A detailed analysis of targets and demand is where it all begins. During a workshop together with you we will determine the purpose of your web page according to your targets, their criteria for success, the targets of the project and prioritising these and finally the combination of the evaluation modules.
    • The correct analysis of targets and needs is the starting point for all further steps in the evaluation of the website.

  • Module 2: technically oriented analysis

    • Here the focus is the strictly technical side of your web page. Compliance with the standards in the basic structures is a quality feature in itself and the fundamental requirement for barrier-free access. Analysing the log files provides information on problems in the system when accessing your page. As a by-product of the analysis we will find out to which extent your webpage is optimised for search engines.
    • The scope of the technical analysis is geared to the requirements that organisations might have regarding the webpage. This might e.g. concern legal requirements against discrimination of disabled persons.
  • Module 3: Inspection of internal and external interests and demands

    • For a criteria-based analysis of your web page we will first of all inspect the interests and demands of the two groups usually involved in a web page: the decision-makers directly in charge of development, administration and editing as well as the users of your web page.
    • Interviewing the decision-makers: During this stage of the evaluation we establish the user profile based on interviews, on-site monitoring or workshops and the intended target group as well as the user-profile the decision-makers are aiming at. Moreover we focus on the main purpose and individual objectives and functions of the new web presence and prioritise those.
    • Survey of users´ requirements: We will establish the profiles of the users (socio-graphical data as well as frequency and reasons for visiting your web site) and their requirements regarding your web site and prioritise these needs accordingly.
    • Alignment of interests and requirements: After consulting decision-makers and users alike we will inspect to which extent the interests of these two groups are consistent and then work out an ideal synthesis of both sides.
  • Module 4: Usability Inspection

    • Our experts carry out an inspection of your web presence. We analyse your web page using a comprehensive catalogue of criteria regarding usability and web design, a synthesis of relevant research literature as well as international standards (e.g. ISO-norms DIN ISO 9241 for dialogue design and usability). This enables us to benchmark your web page from an impartial point of view. The detailed steps of the analysis are as follows:
    • Definition of relevant scenarios considering the established internal and external needs and requirements (scenarios meaning typical tasks the user of the webpage would like to perform) Listing every single difficulty, mistake or good solution the expert detects in their interaction with the web page, furthermore the assignment of (at least) two experts and the use of the catalogue of criteria to guarantee a high level of objectivity.
    • Usability inspections are a proven and effective method to analyse web presences regarding their user-friendliness and the compliance with the guidelines of web design. This form of analysis enables our experts to simulate the interactions by pretending being visitors to your site.
  • Module 5: Usability-Test

    • The target of this method of analysis is the evaluation of the current web presence by the users themselves. Even quite a small number of users (approx. 7 to 10 people) are able to identify most problem spots and potential room for improvements to your site. The detailed steps of the analysis are:
    • Similar to the usability inspection relevant scenarios in which the user has to perform interactions are defined. The user works on those tasks being monitored by the test supervisor. The supervisor takes notes of the interaction behaviour of the user as well as problems or further comments the user might make while working on the scenarios. Each test is rounded off by a standardised usability questionnaire to get the users´ personal impressions of your web page along with its evaluations.
  • Module 6: Documentation of results

    • We collate the results of the individual surveys/tests and then process them in line with actual practice.
    • When presenting the results we will, together with you, discuss appropriate measures to further improve and optimise your web presence.
    • You are going to receive a written final report stating a structured recommended course of action.

Website-Evaluation as a process of continuous improvement!

    • Should you wish, we will also act as consultants for you after an evaluation project. This way, our final report and already established system requirements can be integrated as components into the revision or expansion of your web page.
    • Based on these specifications we will be happy to assist you in the bidding process when selecting and controlling a web agency for implementation.
    • Moreover it is possible to integrate certain elements of evaluation as permanent quality assurance tools for monitoring or benchmarking internet-based business processes.
